One of the biggest debates among fans of Digimon Adventure 02 started after Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna. The reason is simple: in Kizuna, the DigiDestined lose their partners as they grow older. However, in the 02 epilogue we see adults living normally alongside their Digimon in a fully integrated world.
So how can this still work?
The Beginning practically confirms the epilogue
Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning helps provide some answers.
The movie reveals that the number of DigiDestined grew in an exponential way thanks to Ukkomon’s wish, explaining how humans and Digimon eventually began coexisting on a massive scale.
This fits perfectly with the 02 epilogue.
Kizuna may never have been a definitive goodbye
The main point is that Kizuna never states that the Digimon disappeared forever. The movie only shows that the bond was interrupted due to adulthood.
And within Digimon’s own universe, we’ve already seen several artificial systems strengthening these connections:
- Digivices;
- Crests;
- Jogress (using Tailmon’s Holy Ring);
So it makes sense to imagine that:
- Gennai;
- Homeostasis;
- Yggdrasil;
- or even the DigiDestined themselves.
may have found a way to restore those bonds in the future.
The franchise’s real problem
The biggest criticism was never really the ideas themselves, but rather the lack of explanations connecting the events together. Digimon Adventure tri. already suffered heavily from this, and both Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna and Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning are beginning to follow the same path.
Today, many fans do not want another reboot, but rather a story that shows — or at least hints at — how the DigiDestined eventually reached that peaceful future shown in the epilogue of Digimon Adventure 02.
T.K himself makes it clear that this reality was not built easily. A lot needed to happen before humans and Digimon could finally coexist in that way. Even without knowing exactly how everything happened, that epilogue still remains one of the most positive, emotional, and symbolic endings ever created for the DigiDestined.
Of course... with the exception of some of the couples formed in that ending — but that’s a topic for another post.
