Super Mario Galaxy Movie heads toward over US$ 1 billion and reinforces Nintendo’s strength in theaters

The Nintendo seems to have found a practically unbeatable formula in theaters. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrived in cinemas as one of the most anticipated animated movies of 2026 and is already showing a massive performance at the global box office. In just a few days in theaters, the movie surpassed the US$ 500 million mark worldwide, outperforming the pace of the franchise’s first film.

The new movie based on the famous plumber’s universe is already considered one of the biggest commercial successes of 2026 and is rapidly approaching the coveted US$ 1 billion worldwide box office milestone. According to recent reports, the film has already reached more than US$ 628 million in just a few weeks, becoming one of Hollywood’s biggest productions of the year.

Nintendo once again proves the power of video game adaptations

After the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the sequel expands the Nintendo cinematic universe by introducing new characters and classic references from the games. Among the highlights are Rosalina, Yoshi, and even Fox McCloud from the Star Fox franchise, reinforcing Nintendo’s plans to transform its franchises into major cinematic universes.

The financial success practically guarantees that a third Mario movie will eventually be announced. In addition, we already know that Nintendo is working on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, one of the company’s most anticipated upcoming projects.

With the strong performance of animated video game movies, it becomes increasingly clear that gaming adaptations remain extremely powerful in theaters — especially in animated form. This makes sense considering the colorful and cartoon-inspired style of Nintendo franchises, which naturally work better in animation than in live-action.

Meanwhile, live-action game adaptations may be more suitable for franchises with a more realistic tone, especially IPs owned by Sony and Microsoft, whose universes fit more naturally into traditional cinematic aesthetics.

A promising expansion for the Nintendo universe

Beyond the space adventures inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, the movie also feels like a major gateway for future spin-offs. The appearance of characters like Fox McCloud fuels speculation about a possible Star Fox movie, while Donkey Kong remains one of the strongest candidates for a standalone spin-off.

Another franchise fans would love to see adapted is Metroid, especially with a stronger focus on sci-fi horror and suspense. With Nintendo expanding its presence in cinema, projects like these feel much more possible today than they did a few years ago.

Quick Review | Is it worth watching?

Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remains an extremely fun and competent animated film. The movie keeps the visual quality of the first film while delivering a spectacle filled with references for Nintendo fans.

The biggest issue lies in the movie’s pacing and narrative structure, which do not feel as sharp as the first installment. In some moments, especially during the events surrounding the rescue of Princess Rosalina, the story feels rushed and underdeveloped.

Still, the introduction of characters like Yoshi and Star Fox adds a lot of charm to the movie. However, unlike the strong impact Donkey Kong had in the first film, Fox McCloud does not receive the same level of spotlight or memorable presence, even though he still has a significant role in the story.

Even with these issues, the production succeeds in what audiences are looking for: fun, constant action, lighthearted humor, and a massive amount of fan service for longtime Nintendo fans.

Score: 4/5

A great animated movie that is visually impressive and highly entertaining, even if it does not quite reach the same narrative balance as the first film.

Box office confirms the success

Currently, the movie has already surpassed US$ 900 million worldwide and continues to perform strongly in theaters, becoming one of the biggest animated films of the year.

Everything indicates that Mario will continue to be one of the biggest franchises in cinema over the coming years — and likely just the beginning of an even larger expansion of the Nintendo cinematic universe.
