Carrie Is Back — But This Time, the Story Could Be Bigger Than Carrie

Carrie is back — but this time, the story could be bigger than Carrie. More than 50 years after the publication of Stephen King's novel, Carrie White returns in a new series led by Mike Flanagan. The character has already been adapted several times for film and television, so an inevitable question arises: what is left to tell about a story we already know so well?

Perhaps the answer lies precisely in something previous adaptations have not explored as much: the universe surrounding Carrie.

Carrie

Platform: Prime Video
Based on: Carrie, by Stephen King
Creator: Mike Flanagan
Format: 8-episode series

A New Carrie Could Mean a Bigger Story

The new series does not need to simply repeat the classic 1976 film. The television format allows the characters to be developed in greater depth while updating elements of the story for an era defined by social media, cyberbullying, and digital exposure.

But there is an even more interesting change. Mike Flanagan has already talked about the importance of exploring the universe surrounding the characters:

Mike Flanagan on his version of Carrie:

“The third thing is the universe around them.”

Carrie and Stephen King's Shine

This idea strongly echoes IT: Welcome to Derry. The series did not simply retell Pennywise's story, but expanded the mythology of Stephen King, exploring earlier events and characters connected to other works.

One of the most interesting connections lies in the concept of the Shine, primarily known through Danny Torrance in The Shining and Doctor Sleep.

In the new Carrie, her powers can be interpreted as a different manifestation of this same phenomenon. While Danny possesses psychic abilities, Carrie primarily manifests telekinesis.

This raises an interesting possibility: perhaps characters like Carrie, Danny, and others from Firestarter and The Institute do not possess completely separate powers, but rather different manifestations of the same supernatural force.

And Where Does The Dark Tower Fit In?

The theory becomes even more interesting because Mike Flanagan has already connected Carrie to the universe of The Dark Tower. This does not necessarily mean that we will see Carrie meeting other famous Stephen King characters.

The connection could be much more subtle. Different stories could take place in different locations and time periods while still sharing the same supernatural rules. In that case, the Shine could be one of the bridges connecting these stories.

Why Tell Carrie's Story Again?

The audience already knows the tragedy of Carrie White. We have already seen her relationship with Margaret, the bullying, the prom, and the destruction caused by her powers in different versions.

Just as Welcome to Derry transformed a familiar story into an opportunity to expand the mythology of IT, the new Carrie could do something similar with the Stephen King universe.

Perhaps Carrie is not simply a girl with telekinesis. Perhaps she is another piece of a universe where people like her, Danny Torrance, and other gifted children are connected by something we still do not fully understand.

And if this theory is correct, the most interesting question will no longer be “what will happen to Carrie?”, but rather: “Where does Carrie fit into the Stephen King universe?”
