PS6: Sony Begins Talking About the Next Generation, But What Will Set It Apart?

Godzilla Minus Zero - King Ghidorah

Sony has finally started talking more directly about the PlayStation 6. CEO Hiroki Totoki stated that the company has not yet decided when it will launch its next console, casting doubt on rumors of a 2027 release.

The current component market, especially the high demand for memory caused by the growth of artificial intelligence, makes it difficult to determine the price and production plans for the new console. For now, therefore, 2027 remains only a possibility.

The PS5 Has Left an Important Legacy

Before thinking about the PS6, it is worth remembering just how successful the PS5 has been. Launched in 2020 amid a global component shortage, the console surpassed 95 million units sold by June 2026.

The generation also delivered major titles such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Astro Bot, Demon's Souls and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, while further strengthening some of PlayStation's biggest franchises.

The problem for Sony is that this success has created a complicated situation: the PS5 is still an extremely relevant console. So, what exactly will make players upgrade to a new system?

Why Do We Need a PS6?

This may be one of the hardest questions for Sony to answer. For a long time, buying a new PlayStation meant gaining access to games that could not be found on other platforms. Today, however, the strategy has changed.

Sony has increasingly started releasing its titles on PC, while digital services and subscriptions have gained more importance. This does not eliminate the relevance of consoles, but it reduces the need to own a PlayStation to access the company's entire ecosystem.

If the PS6 only offers higher resolution, better graphics and greater performance, it will be difficult to convince people who already own a PS5 that they need to make another investment. The next generation will need to offer something more significant.

The End of Physical Media Changes the Landscape Even Further

Another factor that could directly affect the future of PlayStation is physical media. Sony plans to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, although this does not mean that all physical discs will immediately disappear.

The trend, however, is clear: PlayStation is moving toward an increasingly digital future. This may be convenient for Sony and some players, but it also removes some important advantages of physical games. With a digital copy, consumers cannot simply resell, lend or trade the game in the same way.

And there is an even bigger question: if the console is digital and games are also available on PC, what will be the main reason to buy the hardware?

Can Exclusives Still Save the Proposition?

The most obvious answer remains exclusive games. Franchises such as God of War, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Horizon and Gran Turismo still have enough strength to attract millions of players.

However, Sony itself has been expanding the presence of these productions on PC. The challenge will be finding a balance between selling consoles and reaching a larger audience outside PlayStation.

For this reason, the PS6 will need to offer an experience that goes beyond simply running the same games with better graphics.

What Can We Expect From the PS6?

Sony has not yet officially revealed the design, price or specifications of the PlayStation 6. There is also no confirmed release date. What we do know is that the next generation is being developed in a very different environment from the one in which the PS5 arrived on the market.

The PS5 has already proven that consoles remain relevant. Now, the PS6 will have to prove that a new generation is still necessary. If Sony can combine new features, major exclusives and a truly noticeable evolution, the console could repeat the success of its predecessor.

But with the expansion of PC gaming and the possible reduction/elimination of physical media, one question will inevitably remain: Why buy a console?

This may be the most important question that Sony and its competitors will have to answer before putting their next generations of consoles on store shelves.
