Activision Could Help Shape the Future of Halo
The information gained traction following reports from journalist and insider Rebs Gaming. According to the reports, Sledgehammer Games, a studio best known for its work on Call of Duty, may have developed an early prototype for a possible Halo multiplayer project in 2026.
The prototype reportedly began development in June but was canceled the following month, while still in a very early stage. At this point, therefore, there is no confirmation that the project progressed into full production.
According to the report published by Insider Gaming:
“Microsoft is exploring a proposition to have Activision help develop Halo Games.”
— Information attributed to a source interviewed by Rebs Gaming and reported by Insider Gaming.
It is important to point out that Microsoft, Activision, Sledgehammer Games, and Halo Studios have not officially announced this partnership. Therefore, the possibility should be treated as a rumor based on insider information, rather than confirmation that Activision is developing the next Halo game.
What Could Activision Bring to Halo?
The possibility is particularly interesting because of the experience that Activision studios have in the shooter genre. The company is closely associated with franchises such as Call of Duty, including series like Modern Warfare and Black Ops, which have helped shape the modern shooter market.
Because of this, a potential collaboration with a studio such as Sledgehammer could bring a different perspective to Halo multiplayer, particularly in areas such as combat, movement, weapons, and the structure of competitive experiences.
This does not mean Halo needs to become Call of Duty. On the contrary, the biggest challenge would be preserving the franchise's unique identity while taking advantage of a team experienced in developing major shooter games.
A Potentially Good Sign for Halo Fans
For many players, the idea is also interesting for another reason. Halo was one of the most important franchises associated with Xbox for years, especially during the Xbox 360 generation, when games such as Halo 3 and Halo: Reach achieved enormous recognition among shooter fans.
In the generations that followed, the franchise continued to receive important releases, but it did not consistently reproduce the same cultural and commercial impact that defined its Xbox 360 era. A potential collaboration with other major Microsoft studios could represent an opportunity to explore new possibilities for the future of the series.
It is also worth remembering that Halo Studios continues to work on the franchise. In 2026, the studio released Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, showing that Microsoft continues to invest in the world of Master Chief.
Could the Next Halo Be a Surprise?
It is still too early to say. The potential project involving Sledgehammer was reportedly canceled during its prototype stage, and current reports do not confirm that Activision is actually developing the next game in the franchise.
Even so, the possibility of combining the development experience of Halo Studios with that of major studios specializing in shooters is certainly intriguing. If Microsoft ultimately decides to pursue this path, it could mark a new chapter for one of the most important franchises in Xbox history.
For now, fans will have to wait for further official announcements. At this point, it remains an interesting possibility — not confirmation that Activision is developing the next Halo.
